On August 21, the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission (COGCC) is coming to Glenwood Springs to take public comment on new rules to protect public health and safety. These new protections are the result of our hard work at the legislature to overhaul the entire way our state makes decisions about oil and gas development, for the first time prioritizing public health and safety and environmental protections above industry profits.
This was a hard-won victory, the results of 30 years of grassroots organizing by residents and communities directly impacted by oil and gas in Western Colorado and across the state. But the work is not done. Right now, our opponents are working to undercut the law and prevent its successful implementation, specifically trying to single out the Western Slope to prevent these new rules from applying in our communities.
Now, as the chance for meaningful reform is possible, we must keep up the work to make sure our Western Slope communities are protected under the new law. Join us in front of the COGCC to speak in support of these new rules and demand that all Coloradans deserve their full protection.
The hearing will be on August 21 at the Hotel Colorado in Glenwood Springs. The meeting starts at 9 am but public comment is not until 1 pm. You can view the agenda here. The COGCC has not yet posted a sign-up form for the event. However, you must sign up to speak. We will let you know as soon as the form is live.
Please mark your calendars for this event and set aside time to give testimony on August 21. If you have any questions or concerns, please email Troy Redding. If you cannot attend the hearing but would like to help in the fight to keep our communities safe, please donate. Together we will stand up for healthy, just, and self-reliant communities in Western Colorado.
