Protect Colorado’s Groundwater!

Protect Colorado’s Groundwater!

With the clock running out this legislative session, Senate Bill 192 is still moving through the Colorado Senate. The bill would strengthen uranium cleanup regulations, improve the public involvement in the mill licensing process, and protect our state’s groundwater.

Western Colorado is well-acquainted with the cleanup of old uranium sites. From Durango to Craig, our communities have been dealing with the long-term pollution and impacts of these sites for decades. Now, with the proposed Piñon Ridge uranium mill looming in Montrose County, it is crucial we update our laws to hold any present or future uranium development to the highest standards possible.

SB-192 is a common-sense, reasonable bill that would:

  • Require uranium operations to actively cleanup contaminated water wells back to safe levels.
  • Bring Colorado one step closer to compliance with federal uranium processing standards and increase the public’s role in how uranium mills are licensed in Colorado.
  • Update the law to ensure adequate protections from experimental uranium technology proposed for areas of our state.

SB-192 passed out of the Senate Health and Human Services Committee on a party line vote. On Tuesday, April 29th, the bill’s fate will be determined in the Senate. We need your help to pass SB-192 out of the Senate and into the House!

Help get this bill across the finish line! Please call or email your Senator TODAY and ask them to vote “Yes” on SB-192!
