A big congrats to each and every one of you on winning passage of our big priority Colorado bill — Homestead Exemption And Consumer Debt Protection!
Thanks to our work, individuals who fall into debt through medical bills, a lost job, or tragedy will now have their first $2,500 of cash assets protected from seizure, alongside $250,000 of home equity and $15,000 in motor vehicle value. Read the full bill here.
These and other extra protections for seniors and the disabled significantly increase people’s ability to protect their access to food and shelter in the event of a debt crisis.
This bill would not have happened without our Alliance’s leadership and took three years of work from Alliance member Don Bell and others. These protections will save lives in the coming years and increase economic security for everyone in Colorado.
Our members won the vital support of two Western Slope Republicans for this bill — Grand Junction Representative Janice Rich and State Senator Don Coram. Both broke from their caucus in their votes. It’s very important that they hear that we’re watching and are grateful for their courage.
Please take two minutes and send them a thank you note!
And a final shout out to all our Legislative Committee members for their wonderful work on this!
